RLC Welcomes Deaf Community

As a community, we do our best to be as accessible as possible to diverse communities.  When we first opened our doors almost two years ago, we heard loud and clear that the deaf community had been denied access to supports in the past and that they wanted to connect with hearing communities.

We have come a log way in two years and we believe there are still many things we can do to break down barriers.

As our Deaf Consultant, Valerie Ennis has been instrumental in bringing in deaf folks and increasing access.  Every last Wednesday of the month she hosts a Deaf Community forum where deaf and hearing folks discuss how we can better connect with each other.

Hearing folks are encouraged to come to these forums!!

With Val's leadership, we were able to recently install a video phone (VP) at the RLC:

A major accomplishment at the RLC has been the development of a computer class in American Sign Language.  Many people in this class report never before having access to this type of class, which includes a Certified Deaf Interpreter.  Our next session begins on April 16th!

A great way for us to welcome in the deaf community is to familiarize ourselves with sign language and the art of gestural communication.  Please join us for our weekly class on Tuesdays from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.  In this class you learn some sign language basics, but more importantly, you learn how to be creative in communicating with the Deaf/HOH community.  We can do it!!
