Past Film Events: Take These Broken Wings - November, 2010

The Western Mass RLC will continue their fall film series, ‘Alternative Perspectives on Mental Health’ in November with screenings of 'Take These Broken Wings' with filmmaker, Daniel Mackler.  The purpose of the series is to gather individuals across agencies, schools and the community to view films that offer new ideas or alternative perspectives about mental health experiences as a way of encouraging discussion and considering the potential impact and needs in our area.  These screenings are co-sponsored by the Western Mass RLC, the Center for Human Development, the Brien Center, NAMI Berkshire County, Clinical & Support Options, Advocates, Inc, and the Metro Boston RLC.  All screenings are free and open to the public, though some venues have limited seating so it is suggested that you call to reserve your space at (413) 539-5941 ext. 301.

About the film:  Take These Broken Wings is a 75-minute documentary that
demonstrates that people can recover fully from a diagnosis of
schizophrenia without psychiatric medication.  The film focuses on
Joanne Greenberg (celebrated author of 'I Never Promised You a Rose
Garden') and Catherine Penney (whose story was the focus of 'Dante's
Cure' by Daniel Dormand, MD), while also including feedback from giants
in the field of recovery  (Robert Whitaker, Peter Breggin, MD, Bertram
Karon, PhD) and clips from people on the street who share their thoughts
on mental health and stigma. www.iraresoul.com/dvd.html

About the filmmaker:  'Take These Broken Wings,' produced in 2008, is
Daniel Mackler's first film.  On March 1st of 2010, Daniel ended his
10-year-long career as a paid psychotherapist in New York City.  His
reasons were complex and included a desire to travel and devote more
time to exploring and sharing alternative perspectives and approaches to
mental health.  His self-professed goal is "not just to heal [himself] -
but to change the whole world."      www.iraresoul.com/about.html
